University Dining Mourns Passing of Long-Time U.S. Foodservice Liaison

Pat Nelson, who served 12 years as University Dining’s representative from U.S. Foodservice, passed away unexpectedly on May 13, 2010. She was 63.

“Pat was one of us,” said Randy Lait, director of University Dining. “As the representative from our largest food service provider, she worked very closely with us on a daily basis to ensure we had the ingredients we needed to feed our campus community.”

Pat, who joined U.S. Foodservice in 1992, was a driving force behind the celebrated All Carolina’s meal, the annual dining hall special event that features foods grown or produced in North and South Carolina. She has been instrumental in helping to plan and open numerous dining operations on campus, including Clark Dining Hall, Vaughn Towers, and the campus Port City Java locations. When NC State was called upon to help with the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Pat helped get food donated and delivered; she even arranged for tractor trailers for storage.

Pat didn’t just help feed the Pack, however; she was a big supporter, too. She had season football tickets and her friends called her “Wolfpack Girl.”

“I watched many a State/Carolina game with her,” said James Raynor, University Dining production manager, who worked closely with Pat. “We always would talk about every great win or heartbreaking loss before getting down to business. She was a great friend not only to me, but to many others at University Dining.”

Added Lait, “Beyond the work she did for us, Pat was such a special person. I know she loved N.C. State and we loved her. She was such a key part of our success in our dining program and impacted so many lives through her hard work, dedication, and good deeds. She was the best and we will miss her greatly.”

Pat is survived by her cherished son, Michael Meagher, of Browns Summit, NC; her sister, Linda Clayton and husband, Tom, of Raleigh; two brothers, Howell R. Keezell of Bangkok, Thailand, and Walter B. Keezell and wife, Laura, of San Diego; two nieces, Kristin Clayton of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Robin Clayton Ring of Gatlinburg, TN; two nephews, Jordan and Dillon Keezell of San Diego; and, cousin Julie Richards and her children, Cody and Katrina Richards of Cary, and Tracey Richards McMillon and husband, Michael, of Fayetteville, NC. She also leaves behind her dear friend Bob Richards and her beloved cat, Face Man.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Kay Yow WBCA Foundation, c/o The V Foundation.
