University Dining Approves Take Out

February 3, 2010 (Raleigh, NC)—University Dining has finalized plans to add a take-out option at campus dining halls beginning March 22, 2010.

The new plan will enable students, faculty and staff to request take out when they enter a dining hall, then make use of a reusable take-out container to take their meal back to their room, office, or anywhere else they’d like to eat it.

Randy Lait, director of dining services for NC State, explained, “This is a program that has been requested by the campus community. Our goal was to develop a program that allows take out, works with the meal-plan program, and fits our departmental goals for sustainability. I’m pleased to announce this new take out-program for the campus dining halls.”

As part of University Dining’s green initiatives, the take-out containers will be reusable and recyclable “Eco-Takeouts.” The green-tinted containers will be sold for $3.00 each. Dining hall patrons will purchase the container, which can be used immediately, then brought back to the dining hall and traded for a clean container each time they want to use the take-out option. In the event that a container is returned but a take-out meal is not requested at that time, a token will be issued that can be redeemed later for take out. Customers will also be provided with a disposable cup/lid set, and, if requested, a spork/napkin/salt/pepper kit. Customers may fill their containers with the foods of their choice, but the lid must be able to close.

Take out will be available to both meal-plan holders and walk-in customers at the customer-service desk. You must request take out before your card is swiped. Customers may not utilize take out and consume a meal inside the dining hall on the same card swipe or payment.

The take-out meal at the dining hall uses the meal equivalency for that meal period. Students on the Block and Freedom Pass unlimited meal plans may continue to eat multiple meals inside the dining hall, but only one take-out meal is available at the dining halls per meal period on all meal plans.

Customers will only be able to take out what they can fit into their containers with the exception of one piece of whole fruit because it will not fit into the container. University Dining employees will be on hand in the dining halls to assist with questions about the take-out program and to monitor proper utilization of the program.

Note: this news release was updated on Feb. 9, 2010 to reflect updates to this program.
